Gold Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition in the Brecon Beacons

In preparation for the exciting challenge that is the Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expedition, nine girls set out on Thursday for the stunning Brecon Beacons mountain range in Wales to practice everything they’ll need to know to complete the programme.

They took to the water in canoes for a 16km paddle down the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, then dove straight into their second day, tasked with a hike across the difficult terrain. Practice makes perfect, and although this didn’t quite go to plan with the route cut short – some of the more hidden paths compelled girls to improve their navigation, team and problem-solving skills to find their way – they took it in their stride, debriefed the route with instructors, and their third day was a smashing success. With the rush of scaling the heights of Sugar Loaf hill pushing them onward, they concluded the expedition on the fourth day with a 22km paddle, smiling through rain and shine.

They’re now one step closer to the Lake District expedition this summer! Well done everyone!
