Blasting off to the UK Space Design national finals!

The sky is most certainly NOT the limit for our Sixth Form STEM students, who came away from last Saturday’s UK Space Design regional finals with a truly tremendous win!

The out-of-this-world challenge held at the University of Exeter tasked students from eight schools with drawing on their knowledge of physics, engineering, economics, design and more to meet an unusual project brief: design and cost a Martian base to be used to process materials mined on the planet. Girls combined forces with students from Poole Grammar to form a team complete with subsections focused different aspects of this complex project, led in part by amazing Maynardians Nandipa (Vice President of Engineering) and Jemima (Vice President of Business/Finance) who were voted into management positions.

Our girls showed impressive ingenuity in carving their own path to an exceptionally detailed and well-thought-out final design… and their hard work paid off, with the team stepping proudly into 1st place!

Attendees reported back that they “absolutely loved it” and were “just completely engaged for the whole day!” Their excellent work has won them a coveted spot among 250 students heading to the two-day-long National Finals at Imperial College London in March. From there, twelve have the chance to move forward to the international round held at none other than the Kennedy Space Centre.

Huge congratulations to all, and we couldn’t be more excited to cheer them on come spring!
