Another Phenomenal Set of GCSE results at The Maynard

Posted on August 27, 2024

Students, families and teachers alike at The Maynard are celebrating the many, many triumphs of our marvellous Upper 5s (Year 11s), who brought home another altogether wonderful set of GCSE results in 2024!

  • Nearly a quarter of all results were graded 9 (A**) versus the national average of 5%.
  • 70% of all results were graded 7 (A) or above, versus the national average of 21.7%.
  • 46% of all students were awarded at least five 8/9 grades.
  • An absolutely fantastic 60% achieved grades 9/8 in Physics – over double the national average and completely bucking the UK’s STEM trend.
  • A whopping 80% achieved grades 9/7 in English Language.
  • The Drama results were phenomenal with all our candidates achieving grades 9/8.
  • An incredible 95% were awarded a grade 9/7 in Food & Nutrition.
  • Every PE student scored a flawless set of grades 9/8.

“It’s utterly brilliant,” said Head, Liz Gregory, “And I’m truly over the moon for them all! It really is just rewards for such a hardworking and industrious year groups. A very well done to all our outstanding Upper 5 girls!”

To highlight just a few of this year’s numerous superstar success stories, Anna and Hazel both achieved an immaculate set of straight 9s and were specially commended by OCR, the GCSE awarding body, for their artwork.  “I don’t know how to feel, it’s just so exciting!” said an overjoyed Anna after opening her long-awaited results. “I managed to achieve exactly what I was hoping for, even though I felt a bit hesitant about some (or most!) subjects after the exams. I’m off to celebrate with family this afternoon with some camping in North Wales!”

Poppy is another Upper 5 with lots to be proud of – she has been heavily involved in Ten Tors and the Duke of Edinburgh Award as well as Model United Nations, and still found the time to gain a spectacular set of results with four 9s, four 8s and one 7. Still reeling from the morning, she said, “I’m still a bit shaky from the adrenaline of it all, but a good kind of shaky! I had to stay up quite late to get myself to sleep. I actually got quite sick on the week of my big exams, so I’m especially proud of my English Language grade 8!”

Natural performer Georgie, who competes nationally in cheer and also had a starring role as a Camelot Knight in this year’s laugh-a-minute school musical ‘Spamalot’, had her hard work pay off with a well-deserved 9 in Drama and an outpouring of 8s and 7s in her core subjects. “I’m just ecstatic! I expected to do well in some but I’m over the moon with some of my other results, especially English Literature, as I got my highest ever grade in it! I’m also super proud of my Drama result. I’m planning to celebrate with a barbecue with my friends!”

Olesia deserves a humongous round of applause for her exemplary efforts as one of our two Ukrainian pupils to take GCSEs this year: “I didn’t expect to do so well, especially in English Literature, where I got a 7! English is my second language so I was completely shocked to see that. It’s amazing!”

Liz Gregory, Head, said, “It was such a pleasure to see so many happy faces on Results Day and to congratulate everyone on their individual successes. Our ever-inspiring girls and their brilliant teachers have put in an immense amount of time and effort to have achieved so phenomenally – especially given that the proportion of top grades awarded nationally has fallen from 2023 – and that hard work has clearly paid off in spades. I can’t wait to see what glorious new heights they reach next as they begin their A-levels in September.”
