We are beyond delighted to announce that The Maynard’s phenomenal Class of 2024 have performed fantastically at A-level!
- Results were the best in a decade discounting COVID years.
- 31% of grades were at A*, 70% A*/A, 86% A*/B.
- Half gained at least three A*/A grades.
- A tremendous two thirds of students achieved AAB or above.
- Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) results were amazing with 73% A*, 85% A*/A and 100% A*/B.
It is crystal clear that every girl can be hugely proud of what they’ve achieved. Liz Gregory, Head of this leading girls’ school, expressed her joy: “These girls have worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserve their impressive results as such a remarkable cohort. I am thrilled that they are now fully equipped to start exciting new chapters in their lives and I could not be prouder – a very well done to them all!”
This means that these superstars are off to follow their passions at the most prestigious universities: 11% are off to make their dreams a reality at Oxbridge, with Imperial, UCL, Durham, Edinburgh, Warwick, Bristol and numerous other Russell Group destinations well-represented. Indeed, they are pursuing a huge range of options with an almost perfect 50/50 split between Arts and STEM subjects – from English, History, PPE, Law, Fine Art and International Relations to Economics, Architecture, Medicine, Physics and Engineering.
Equally brilliant is that they will be combining their co-curricular and academic interests. Joining one of our post A-level candidates who has just enjoyed a year at the Sorbonne at Oxford, will be a budding musician (History of Art, 4A*s, A* in EPQ), who will be aiming to build on her musical talents by getting involved in the amazing choral traditions at the university. An amazing athlete (Biology, 2A*s, an A, and an A* in her EPQ), will be having some early mornings as she looks to continue competing as an elite rower. Meanwhile, over in Cambridge, one of our writer extraordinaires (Human Social and Political Sciences), 4A*s and an A* in the EPQ, is likely be found at the hub of university politics or writing for ‘Varsity’, whilst another rising star (Medicine, 4A*s) may be treading the boards.
“I’ve been saying ‘hopefully Cambridge’ when asked about my university destination all summer, and now I can say ‘definitely Cambridge!’” recounts one Cambridge-goer. “The course combines everything about my A-levels that I really loved and I’m so excited to begin.”
An incredibly gifted group artistically, one of our awe-inspiring artists (2 A*s, an A, A* in her EPQ) was singled out by OCR as one of the top candidates nationally. This exceptional creativity is reflected more widely with another (3 As) off to Bristol to study History of Art, and an artist with a mind for combining different disciplines (2 A*s, an A and an A* in her EPQ) going to Bath for Structural and Architectural Engineering with two students ready to experiment (A*AB and AAC) taking on Art Foundation years to find their niche. One of the group shares a common sentiment that the joy of the big day and all its triumphs “doesn’t feel real yet” – “I’m sure it’ll sink in tomorrow!”
Not to be outdone, the scientists have had a marvellous year. A brilliant biologist has led the way (3A*s, an A with an A* in her EPQ) and is off to Exeter to study Biological Sciences with wonderful performances from other top scientists (set to study Natural Sciences, Bath, 4A*s; Chemistry, Bristol, A*AA; and Computer Science, Lancaster A*AB with an A in EPQ).
We are similarly delighted that the achievements of our new joiners and international students are also absolutely fabulous, including: a future Chemist heading to Bath (3A*s and an A* in the EPQ); a Biochemist at King’s College (3As and a C); another studying Biomedical Sciences at Warwick (3As and an A* in the EPQ); a rocket scientist in the making going to Exeter for Physics with Astrophysics (3 As and an A* in the EPQ); and another laying down the law at Nottingham studying Law with Criminology (3As and an A* in the EPQ) to name a few.
The humanities equally share dazzling success, with one humanities student (3As with an A* in the EPQ) off to Durham for PPE, joined there by a top Geographer (A*AA with an A* in the EPQ); a thinker for the ages (A*AA) going to York for Philosophy; a businesswoman (BBB) going to Newcastle for Food Business, Management and Marketing; and another uncovering secrets of the past (A*AA with an A* in the EPQ) heading to St Andrews for Ancient History and Archaeology. Further afield one girl has received a sports scholarship to study Liberal Arts in the USA at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia, reflecting the remarkable breadth of the opportunities in front of them.
“I’m nervous but so, so thrilled to be going to my top choice university,” says one of our leavers. She neatly sums up the overwhelming sentiment of the day: “I’m just beyond happy!”
“There really are too many amazing individual success stories to name; we are immensely excited about what they will go on to achieve,” concludes Liz Gregory, Head. “I must also wholeheartedly thank all the staff who have worked tirelessly and inspired students to go above and beyond. They have been an essential part of these truly magnificent accomplishments.”
