Joey officially named in top 1% nationally for
mathematical success

Enormous congratulations to Joey (Upper 5) who scored so highly in last term’s Hamilton Mathematical Olympiad that she was awarded a distinction and, we have subsequently learned during the summer holidays, a bronze medal which puts her firmly in the top 1% nationally for students her age. Joey qualified into this particular Olympiad as one of 600 students invited by UKMT to take part following her success in the previous Intermediate Mathematical Challenge which is a two hour paper consisting of six problems to solve and is sat by all students in Years 9-11.

Vigorous proofs need to be written in order to score well on the questions and it is not expected that students complete all the questions – in fact, two full questions in the time would be considered above average. What Joey has achieved is truly exceptional and we really are very proud of her, and equally delighted that she is now showing an interest in the mentoring scheme to advance her skills even further. This will see her participating along with our Sixth Form girls in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls at the end of the month and we wish her, and all the others, lots of luck for this!
