Lower 5’s trip around historic Exeter

Posted on May 11, 2024

Girls from Lower 4 (Year 8) to Lower 5 (Year 10) are entering the EMACT (East Midlands Association of Classical Teachers) “Landscapes of Roman Britain” Competition, and Lower 5 enjoyed a sunny morning studying local history as part of their research.

They travelled to the fascinating historic site on Catherine Street which boasts the remains of a 15th-century almshouse, a 13th-century canonry, a 4th-century Roman dwelling and a 1st-century Roman watchtower. The girls photographed Athelstan’s Tower and the Roman Walk alongside Princesshay, and also managed a flying visit to the RAMM to see Benjamin Robert Haydon’s impressive painting of the mythical Roman figure Marcus Curtius. Hopefully the large scale of this paining will inspire them as they complete their own artwork!
