Involvement in charitable fundraising is an integral part of the educational experience that we offer at The Maynard. Our aim to encourage students to be “socially responsible and compassionate” is exhibited in this aspect of school life.
Charity
Each year, the school raises a considerable amount of money for a variety of local and global charities. Individual Houses decide on their own fundraising activities and implement them themselves, always displaying an enormous enthusiasm and dedication to their causes. This helps to build a sense of community within the school, raises an awareness of the needs of others and demonstrates the essence of the broad and balanced curriculum that we offer.
The challenge of charity fundraising is very much enjoyed by the pupils and is perceived by them as an opportunity to indulge their creativity and imagination in order to benefit others. This has resulted in some very enterprising ideas over the years, including ‘Miss Comic Relief’, pyjama days, fashion shows, nail bars, fetes and even being a sponsored dinner lady for a day!
Outreach
The Maynard Partnership Programme is thriving and growing year on year. The school has a long history of supporting its local community by providing educational opportunities for as many children as possible.
We are very proud to have strong partnerships with schools in the area, where expertise is shared and students collaborate for their mutual benefit. In the last year alone, our partnerships programme benefitted over 430 students from 24 local schools ranging from pre-school age through to Sixth Formers, whilst also giving our Maynard students a wealth of new experiences beyond the classroom.
Partnership events include an exceptionally broad spectrum of subjects. To mention just a few: we host multiple interschool STEM challenge days from learning about forensics to structural engineering; our annual Chiefs at Maynard Masterclass is always a fantastic experience for girls interested in rugby, most recently involving over 120 girls from eight schools; and students in the area are invited to watch our school productions in a professional theatre.
For older students, we have recently launched a mentoring programme in which our Sixth Form students are paired with Year 11 pupils in other schools to provide remote academic tutoring. We also provide careers tasters, such as hosting a mock trial in partnership with the University of Exeter for budding lawyers to have a hands-on experience of a real court room.
