Music

Music here at The Maynard permeates all aspects of school life and is, quite simply, exceptional. Our Senior Choir shot to fame in 2015 when we were the only school in the South West to perform at the Rugby World Cup opening ceremonies after a rigorous selection process involving over 100 schools. The choir travelled to Bath where they sang for the Australian Wallabies at the Assembly Rooms to rapturous applause and subsequently lapped up the media attention!

Aside from this celebrity status, here at School we aim to foster in all our girls an appreciation and enjoyment of music in its many forms. From jazz to classical, rock to opera we do it all and we boast numerous quartets, quintets, ensembles and choirs from the Junior School upwards.

Such is the popularity of our many musicians that we are regularly asked to perform at many venues – from the Cathedral to Budleigh Salterton Music Festival, at the opening of train stations to the flower tent at the Devon County Show, and many more besides!

Practice sessions take place during the extended lunch break or in after-school clubs but we also offer individual tuition via our dedicated team of peripatetic music teachers. Over 195 lessons are delivered each week, with over 55% of girls learning a musical instrument. We can arrange lessons for Piano, Strings (Violin, Viola, ’Cello, Double Bass, Guitar), Woodwind (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone), Brass (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone), Percussion (Orchestral and Drum kit) and Singing. Trial lessons can also be arranged and paid for on a one-off basis. For more information on individual music tuition, please click here.
