English Literature A-Level (Edexcel specification) is an ideal choice for anyone who loves reading and discussing and is interested in the big questions. Students will develop their enjoyment of literary studies through reading and writing widely, independently and critically. We will also focus on the significance of cultural and historical influences upon readers and writers, and invite students to research connections and comparisons between different literary texts, informed by interpretations of other readers.
English, with its combination of technical and creative elements, is a unique subject with no clear limits and in our opinion this is what makes it so special. It is an enjoyable subject to study at A-Level because the student’s own personal contribution really matters. The course requires students to show knowledge and understanding of prose, poetry and drama; as such our study will include an exploration of two plays, two novels and a selection of poetry.
We are also pleased to organise a range of theatre visits throughout the year. Perhaps most notably, the annual four-day residential trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon with the Lower 6 (Year 12) students, during which we see several performances and enjoy excellent workshops. This is a unique and enriching experience for our girls which ignites a spark about Shakespeare and about literature that goes well beyond what can be achieved in a classroom.
