Super Saturday saw our Under 14 Netball team, the Devon County Champions, compete in the National Schools Final at Welwyn Garden City, whilst Amelia Moody (Lower 5) was running her biggest race ever at the National Schools Cross Country Championships in Norwich.
Given Amelia trains on Dartmoor, and was more than prepared for a hilly track to sap her fellow competitors, the flat conditions on the day were a huge disappointment! However, she ran an absolute stormer to finish 67th out of 345 competitors in an incredibly close contest, and with only one second splitting her and three other runners. She was also 2nd in Devon and 7th out of the entire South West (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Avon, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) which is an amazing achievement and a true testimony to her huge talent. Without doubt, she has an exciting future in the sport and we wish her the best of luck for the upcoming track season.
The netball team also fared brilliantly with everyone getting a slice of the action at some point, even three younger girls in Lower 4 (Year 8). The standard of play was exceptionally tough, as to be expected at National level, but our girls were positive throughout and determined to enjoy the experience. After eight gruelling matches in the most competitive pool (that fielded the eventual winner and runners-up), they didn’t progress through to the semi-final stage but spirits remained high and they travelled home happy in the knowledge that they are now officially ranked 11th= from all the schools, independent and state, in the whole country! An excellent result for a school of our size!
Our enormous thanks to Harry’s restaurant for sponsoring the team’s new kit – by all accounts, the bobble hats especially were a massive hit and admired enviously by everyone at the competition (whilst keeping everyone warm and sheltered from an aggressive wind)!
