We are delighted to announce that we’ve been crowned The Sunday Times Independent School of the Year in the South West. This prestigious title recognises our exceptional academic achievements in addition to our dedication to fostering a nurturing and happy environment for all students.
The Times & Sunday Times Parent Power identifies more than 1,600 of the highest-achieving schools and is widely acknowledged as the most authoritative school survey. The 2025 edition, which is available online today and as a printed supplement on Sunday (8th December 2024), assesses academic results as the performance of a given school compared to others in the same town, local authority and nationally.
As the oldest girls’ school in the country, The Maynard has a centuries-old reputation for expertise and innovation in teaching girls, and this latest award is testament to this prowess.
“This has topped another fantastic year for our amazing school. Our A-level results this summer were phenomenal, ranking as the best in the South West and significantly ahead of other schools in Devon. Similarly, our GCSE results far surpassed the national average on all accounts,” said Liz Gregory, Head of The Maynard.
“At the heart of this success is the fact that we are a single-sex school and able to create a completely female-centric learning environment, tailoring teaching methods and extracurricular activities to suit the individual interests and needs of our students.
“We also firmly believe that happy girls are successful girls, and our double award-winning wellbeing provision is the magic formula that underpins this philosophy. Fun, laughter and an infectious enthusiasm are the hallmarks of a Maynard education, and our students absolutely know they’ll be supported through anything that life throws at them.
“To be bringing back the title of the South West Independent School of the Year again – after our success in 2020 – is a true testament to our exceptional students, and the enduring brilliance and dedication of our superb teachers and wider community.”
