Year 10 Girls into STEM Day

Posted on July 1, 2024

Our annual Year 10 (Lower 5) Girls into STEM event was again a smashing success last week! With around 100 girls joining us, including 50 from other local schools, it was an incredibly insightful day designed to teach girls about engineering and open their eyes to the variety of STEM career options and degree apprenticeships they can pursue.

The day was jointly organised by The Maynard and The STEM Workshop to give girls the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be an engineer, developing key industry skills. Small teams worked together to complete two hands-on Engineering challenges involving designing, building and then innovating an electric vehicle to transport goods autonomously.

As the cherry on top, we also welcomed a panel of highly successful Old Maynardians to act as STEM ambassadors. Pip, Jemima, Alexandra and Charlotte were kind enough to join us and give presentations on their careers as well as judging the competition. They were such excellent role models and truly inspiring examples for where STEM can take budding scientists!

The impact of this event and our wider programme of STEM enrichment is hugely positive: 50% of our Year 13 (Upper 6) leavers choose to study STEM subjects at university, compared to the average of 35%. Thank you to all our guests and to everyone involved in making it such a great day for all things STEM!
